Yesterday, Monday,  was so foggy. We were waiting for 2 workmen to show up (neither did) but since we knew that would be leaving in the morning, we filled our tanks: – $2.74 a gallon. I have lost all sense of value. I filled the rental car with gas for that price. But, as I often hear, “this is a once in a lifetime trip.”

Another boat at the Club left to go to the Lake and returned. He said that the fog was really thick. I hate fog – I remember the 4 hours of inching our way through the Chespeake. Up the Bridge to Bay trail, which goes along the St. Clair River to Lake Huron. At the bridge the fog was so thick.

Along the walk there is the Huron Lighthouse boat. And the people of Michigan were out in full force, enjoying the sun that was peeking through the fog. .

We decided that if there was a hint of sun we would leave early in the morning – there was not a hint but a full blast in your face “look at me!” I made coffee; we dressed; and before having coffee we were off the dock.

As you enter or exit the Black River this is the landmark that you look for. (Last year there was a lighted star at the top). We went out the Black River and into St. Clair River. Not a boat in sight.

We “fought” the current and entered the lake. Our last experience on the Lake Huron was quite bumpy. This was the opposite. Kelley kept saying , “It’s as flat as a lake.”  We didn’t see any freighters or boats that weren’t miles away. We don’t know where the people are…maybe we aren’t suppose to be here.

Our planned trip of 33 miles to Port Sanilac changed to 65 miles to Harbor Beach, and because all was so great, to 90 miles to Port Austin.  We arrived at 4. And glad to be off the boat.

There was exercise for Kelley. You know Kelley. How long can he sit, even when he is on the boat?swatter

There were flies. Annoying black flies; not the kind that bite…just hang around. We have screens, but they kept sneaking in. I am not sure who was the bigger pest, the fly or the swatter.

Rounding the “thumb” we came upon the Port Austin Reef Light. I give you the light:ptaustinlight

If people don’t read their charts they would be in very unhappy. This light is way out from the land and one would guess that you could sneak on by, but there are spots before the harbor that are 2 feet.

Here we are for the night.portaustinhome

We left Sassy Marina around noon. There was a break in the weather and we wanted to get going.

Guest Dock at Port Huron

It was a pleasant trip, about 27 miles up the St. Clair River to Port Huron. There weren’t any ships on the river and very few boats. It took 3 hours – we tied up in the same spot we were when we visited last September.

We really like this yacht club. It is run by the members – no employees. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. If you want a drink, a member goes behind the bar and makes it for you. And the prices are so cheap!!!!! It is an active racing club. The members that race a lot are given wells near the entrance to the St. Clair. Others are in another spot farther up the river.

Father’s Day

Going for a walk through Port Huron

We walked through part of the town of Port Huron. There are many old homes. Many are in beautiful condition, but there are a few that are falling apart.

Love the paint choices

As you walk down Military Street there are speakers that have a radio station playing. Some of the music was pretty good.

A Log Cabin at the Museum

We went to the Port Huron Main Museum. There really isn’t much there, but there was an exhibit about ships that have encountered difficulties on the Great Lakes (read that to mean: sank). Ships, I say, not pleasure craft. There was also a log cabin on the grounds; it will be open on the 27th, should you be in Port Huron.

Just hangin' out!

Just hangin' out!

Kelley could hardly wait to get to Sassy on Monday. When we arrived the boat was being waxed, zincs were being put on and the dinghy was about to be hoisted onto the T&T.

The sun was out and there was a promise of “summer” coming.

But, the weather faked us out. Most of our stay at Sassy was overcast and we had thunderstorms and, of course, rain. Rain, we are wondering if rain equals summer here.

I feel like all we have done since we arrived is drive, shop, buy, load, stow, meet workmen, call workmen and then repeat from the beginning. But soon, there will be cruising.

Ain't she pretty?

Ain't she pretty?

Prime Time‘s engines started right up. The generator also is working correctly. And the lift works. Yippee!

We landed in Detroit and made our way out to Algonac. We are staying at Linda’s Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast. We made a quick visit to the boat and then had dinner at Lega’s. The adventure is about to begin again.
